friends & politics :

editorialhedgehog:

I recently ran into the issue of a friend supporting Mitt Romney.

Now, here’s the thing.

I CANNOT separate politics from my relationships. I am not able to do this. I don’t have the choice of sitting down and deciding, “well, we just won’t talk about politics or anything like that,” because, guess what? When you vote for Romney, or any person who is openly against LGBT people and every other minority group on the fucking planet, you are-

  • taking away what few liberties I have
  • denying me the right to equal treatment
  • saying that I shouldn’t be able to be who I am
  • Saying that it’s okay for employers to refuse to let me work for them BASED on my status as an LGBT person
  • saying that it’s okay for housing folks to deny me residence based on my status as an LGBT person
  • saying that it’s okay for colleges to refuse to admit me based on my status as an LGBT person
  • denying me medical care
  • denying me basic human respect
  • denying me the right to marry whoever I wind up loving
  • saying that I am an abomination
  • saying that I should be subjected to torture to try and ‘cure’ me of my LGBT status

And tell me, what sort of friend would do that?

What sort of person could vote for someone who has made it very clear that they will have all of these things come to pass, and many, many more, and then try to look me in the eye and say that they’re my friend?

You are not my friend if you are in favor of bigotry. You are not my friend if you are voting for someone who will ensure that I continue to be treated as less than human.

YOU might be able to separate politics and friendships, but that’s because the outcome of this will not be so drastic for you, as a white cishet person. Me, though? If Romney is elected, I will be ROYALLY fucked over, as a queer trans person. AND I’M WHITE. My LIFE is rooted in politics, the course of my life is dictated by who is tolerant and who isn’t. I don’t have a choice but to care about all of this. Now, it’s great for you that you feel like you can just drop it at any point in time and not let it change anything between you and other people, but I CANNOT do that.

No one who is voting for someone who will make my life a living hell should be able to look me in the eye and try to pretend that they are my friend.
